Jason Pierre-Paul Had His Index Finger Amputated Wednesday

Update:

A source tells Justin Tasch of the New York Daily News that the information leaked to ESPN about Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul‘s condition may have come from someone within his camp.

  • Otherwise, Tasch mentions that the issues of medical privacy and HIPAA violations would be in play.
  • Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk previously reported that a lawsuit is possible for the leaking of Pierre-Paul’s medical records.
  • HIPAA laws will target the source who initially leaked the information such as healthcare workers, hospitals, and insurance companies, per David Chao.

Tasch spoke to a source familiar with the situation who mentioned that JPP was presented with several options for fixing his hand, including amputation. The decision to undergo the procedure was considered to be his best opportunity for getting back on the field as soon as possible.

While it’s unclear just how long Pierre-Paul will be out, Tasch’s source said that there’s still an opportunity that he could be available for Week 1 of the NFL season.

As of now, the Giants placing Pierre-Paul on the non-football injury list is considered a “certainty,” according to Tasch.

ESPN Ed Werder reports that Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul has undergone numerous surgeries and expected to remain in hospital another two or three days.

  • Pierre-Paul is reportedly also dealing with right thumb fractures, but they should heal in six weeks or so.

As for the procedure Pierre-Paul underwent, Chao mentions that a split thickness skin graft is actually good news, as it’s less severe than if other procedures. Chao adds that this will give JPP the best recovery and overall healing.

Adam Schefter has obtained a medical charts that show Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated on Wednesday.

According to a medical source who spoke to Schefter, Pierre-Paul is expected to play this season, “sooner than people think.”

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media confirms the news and adds that cutting off his finger simplifies and accelerates his recovery, which could lead to him returning in less than two months.

The medical records also show that JPP needed a skin graft to his lower arm as well.

Jordan Raanan reports that the Giants were unaware that Pierre-Paul had any of his fingers amputated until after the news broke.

Mike Freeman of the Bleacher Report is hearing from sources that while Jason Pierre-Paul’s injury isn’t catastrophic, it could still force him to miss “significant time.”

According to Freeman, the Giants coaching staff is reportedly “absolutely apoplectic” about the situation, as even before the fireworks incident, the team had concerns about whether they could trust Pierre-Paul with a huge payday.

Freeman adds that this concern is now “cemented.”

Earlier in the day, Giants trainer Ronnie Barnes and former Giants linebacker Jessie Armstead left South Florida after they were unable to meet with Pierre-Paul.

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that JPP refused the Giants’ offer to set him up with hand specialists in Manhattan.

Meanwhile, several close friends and teammates of Pierre-Paul have said that they’ve been unable to get in touch with him since the accident.

Pierre-Paul, 26, played out his five-year, $20.05 million rookie contract that included $11,629,807 million guaranteed.

The Giants wound up using their franchise tag on Pierre-Paul back in early March, which will pay him a fully guaranteed salary of $14.813 million for the 2015 season.

Jason Fitzgerald points out that the Giants could still pull the franchise tag at any time, which would make Pierre-Paul a free agent immediately.

In 2014, Pierre-Paul recorded 77 tackles, 12.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and a recovery over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 7 defensive end in a 4-3 system out of 59 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Pierre-Paul and his injury as the news is available.
