DeMarco Murray Still Viewed As A Tradeable Commodity, Despite His Salary

An AFC executive tells Albert Breer of NFL Media that he believes Eagles RB DeMarco Murray would still be a tradeable commodity, even though his salary could create issues.

“I would guess the contract would probably be more of a hindrance to a trade than his ’15 production,” the executive tells Breer.

Breer mentions that while it will be difficult for the Eagles to trade Murray’s salary, it’s “not impossible.

Last year, the Saints were able to trade TE Jimmy Graham to the Seahawks with Seattle taking on three years and $27 million of what was a four-year, $40 million deal.

If Murray were to be dealt, Breer expects it to be to a team that has money to spend, and are possibly in a position where they would need to get over the salary floor.

As of now, Murray has four years and $31 million left on his contract, but only $9 million guaranteed.

Of course, there’s the issue of compensation, which Breer believes the Eagles could recoup a low-round pick for Murray.

In recent days, there has been multiple reports that Murray could be trying to get the Eagles to release him, so that he could return to the Cowboys.

  • Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, reported Thursday evening that there’s “a lot of truth” to the notion that Murray would like to return to the Cowboys.
  • Jason Cole of B/R reported something similar regarding Murray.

It’s worth mentioning that Murray told reporters on Thursday that he “100 percent” wants to be back with the Eagles next year.

Murray, 27, signed a five-year, $40 million contract that included $21 million guaranteed with the Eagles back in March. He stands to make base salaries of $1 million (2015) $7 million (2016), $7.5 million (2017), $7.5 million (2018) and $7.5 million (2019) over the remainder of the agreement.

This season, Murray has ran for 569 yards on 163 carries (3.5 YPC) to go along with 39 receptions for 295 yards receiving and five total touchdowns for the Eagles. Pro Football Focus has Murray rated as the No. 60 running back out of 67 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Murray’s future with the Eagles as the news is available.
