Eugene Monroe’s Future With Ravens In Doubt?

Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports that LT Eugene Monroe‘s future with the Ravens is in doubt.

Wilson points out that Monroe declined a simple contract restructure during the offseason that could have helped the team’s cap situation. The Ravens were reportedly disappointed with Monroe’s refusal to help them out.

Beyond that, Baltimore just placed Monroe on season-ending injured reserve after he dealt with injuries in 2015.

Monroe, 28, is in the second year of his five-year, $37.5 million contract that included $19 million guaranteed. He’ll make a base salary of $5.5 million this season and another $7.7 million in 2016, but the contract includes no guaranteed money after this year.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Monroe would free up $2.1 million in cap space while creating $6.6 million in dead money next year. However, designating him as a post-June 1 release would boost their cap savings to $6.5 million.

His 2015 season comes to an end with him appearing in just six games for the Ravens. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 23 offensive tackle out of 77 qualifying players.

Monroe was an effective player when he was on the field, and it’s not as though left tackles are easy to come by, so I wouldn’t completely rule out him returning next year. Even so, this is something to keep an eye on moving forward.
