DeMarco Murray Could Be Eagles’ No. 4 Running Back Today

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Eagles are expected to go with a rotation at running back on Sunday, and there’s a chance DeMarco Murray could be fourth on their depth chart if he’s active.

“The Eagles are weighing all options when it comes to their running back rotation today, even benching DeMarco Murray,” Rapoport said.

Meanwhile, Albert Breer reports that the Eagles are likely to go with Darren Sproles as their lead back with Ryan Mathews and Kenjon Barner being mixed in.

In regards to the reports that Murray met with team owner Jeffrey Lurie and expressed his frustration with the situation, Rapoport says that he doesn’t view HC Chip Kelly as approachable.

As for his talk with Jeffrey Lurie, my understanding is he didn’t approach Chip Kelly for the same talk because he didn’t think Chip was as approachable … which, of course, represents a bigger problem,” Rapoport said. “Murray has not made a ton of friends in the Eagles’ locker room, this rubs some people the wrong way, especially this week. So it’s worth considering what role he will have going forward.

Reports from earlier in the week mentioned that Murray could be trying to get the Eagles to part ways with him in an attempt to return to the Cowboys. However, it’s hard to say that this is really something being considered by the Eagles at this point in time.

Murray, 27, signed a five-year, $40 million contract that included $21 million guaranteed with the Eagles back in March. He stands to make base salaries of $1 million (2015) $7 million (2016), $7.5 million (2017), $7.5 million (2018) and $7.5 million (2019) over the remainder of the agreement.

This season, Murray has ran for 569 yards on 163 carries (3.5 YPC) to go along with 39 receptions for 295 yards receiving and five total touchdowns for the Eagles. Pro Football Focus has Murray rated as the No. 60 running back out of 67 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Murray’s future with the Eagles as the news is available.
