Redskins “Sold” On Kirk Cousins As Long-Term QB, Want To Get Extension Done ASAP

Update:

Mike Jones of the Washington Post reports that the Redskins are “sold” on Kirk Cousins as their long-term quarterback, and want to get a contract in place sooner rather than later.

However, Washington is reportedly remain undecided when it comes to Cousins’s value, and contract talks between the team and the quarterback’s representatives have not yet reached advanced stages, according to Jones.

With this in mind, Jones expects the Redskins to either get a long-term deal worked out with Cousins or apply their franchise tag to him in the coming months.

Two sources tell Jones that Cousins’s camp likely would want to see them part ways with Robert Griffin III to show their commitment to him being their quarterback moving forward.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the Redskins are “sold onKirk Cousins being their future quarterback and have already expressed interest in getting an extension done as soon as possible.

  • La Canfora adds that Washington loves Cousins’ play, make up and leadership as a quarterback.
  • They’ve seen enough this season to commit a “big-boy contract” to Cousins and are prepared to use their franchise tag on him in needed.

Previous reports had said that the two sides have had preliminary contract talks, but it sounds like they’re hoping to make a lot of progress in the coming months.

The franchise tag would run them close to $19 million next season, but would also buy them some additional time to work on a long-term extension.

Cousins, 27, is in the final year of his four-year, $2,572,688 rookie contract that included a $472,688 signing bonus. He’ll make a base salary of $660,000 for the 2015 season before becoming an unrestricted free agent during the offseason.

This season, Cousins has thrown for 3,306 yards while completing 69.2 percent of his passes to go along with 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions over the course of 13 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 28 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.

We have Cousins listed as the No. 25 player in our Top 25 – 2016 Free Agents list.

We’ll have more regarding a potential extension for Cousins as the news is available.
