NFL Notes: Chip Kelly, Johnny Manziel, Browns, & Eagles

Chip Kelly

  • Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that if the Navy job were to be available, former Eagles HC Chip Kelly may have interest in the position.
  • Mortensen mentions that Kelly enjoyed his obscure years at New Hampshire and he operated in relative obscurity from a media standpoint at Oregon.
  • Beyond that, money is unlikely to be a major determining factor for Kelly when it comes to his next job.
  • It is, however, worth mentioning that Kelly’s preference is reportedly to remain in the NFL, so we’ll have to see if he ends up showing any interest an a college job.

Johnny Manziel

Browns HC Mike Pettine told reporters on Thursday that “there are problems” with QB Johnny Manziel that will need to be addressed again during the offseason.

Here is a guy that has an NFL skill set, he’s very talented, if you spend some time with him, he’s a likable guy, you root for him,” said Pettine, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “But there are problems there that we’ll talk as we’re headed to the offseason about getting addressed. And I’ve said this before, we want to make sure that all of our players are in good shape as people first, players second. Because I don’t think you can be as effective as you can be as a player if things aren’t right off the field. And he’s a good example of that.”

Browns

  • Browns impending free agent RT Mitchell Schwartz said, in a perfect world, he’d like to return to the Browns, but added that it doesn’t mean it will happen. (Scott Petrak)
  • Browns WR Andrew Hawkins (concussions) said he expects to resume career next season. (Scott Petrak)

Eagles

  • Chris Mortensen reports that Eagles owner Jeffery Lurie was not just frustrated with the team’s performance, but “angry” about the situation, which led to him firing HC Chip Kelly.
  • Sources tells Mortensen that Lurie was frustrated with the Kelly’s “inability to build even cursory personal relationships, from the owner to the players.
  • This created a situation where there was really no way whatsoever for Kelly to save his job, even if he was willing to give up personnel control.
  • According to Mortensen, Howie Roseman will remain as the vice president of football operations, but is not expected to be the team’s general manager again.
  • Tom Donahoe has been promoted to head the personnel department, but he has no desire to serve as the GM at this stage of life, according to Mortensen, which has left the team searching for a new personnel director and a new coach.
