Report: Chargers Expected To Retain HC Mike McCoy

Michael Gehlken of the Union Tribune reports that the Chargers are expected to retain HC Mike McCoy.

Recent reports have said that McCoy was likely coaching his final game as the Chargers’ head coach. However, is sounds like this report may have been a little premature.

Chargers’ president of football operations John Spanos is expected to make the final decision, but he intends to wait until the regular season has completed before announcing anything.

Gehlken mentions that the decision is likely to take into account the fact that the Chargers’ roster was in poor shape when the McCoy and GM Tom Telesco took over a few years ago.

Even if McCoy survives to see another season, Gehlken mentions that changes to the coaching staff are likely to be made. Beyond that, personnel issues will also need to be addressed.

One other factor that could work in McCoy’s favor is that there is reportedly a strong rapport between McCoy, Telesco and Spanos.

Philip Rivers told reporters on Friday that McCoy isn’t the problem.

Mike’s not the problem,” Rivers said Friday. “It’s not like, ‘Oh, if it was another head coach who wasn’t Mike, this team would’ve donethat.’ Nah. That’s crazy. That’s a crazy assessment.”

Since taking the Chargers job in 2013, McCoy has led them to a record of 22-25 (46.8 percent) including one playoff win. He’s posted back-to-back seasons with a 9-7 record, but they’re off to a 2-6 start in 2015.

We’ll have more regarding the Chargers and McCoy’s future as the news is available.
