NFL Notes: Chargers, Giants, Lions, & Raiders

Chargers

  • Jason Cole of B/R reports that the top decision-makers within the Chargers’ organization will meet Sunday to determine the fate of HC Mike McCoy.
  • A source tells Cole that the Chargers are “leaning” towards keeping McCoy, but team executives want him to change three or four position coaches to improve the team.
  • In the event that the Chargers elect to move on from McCoy, Cole suggests a veteran head coach such as Mike Shanahan could make sense for the Chargers.

Giants

Giants HC Tom Coughlin wouldn’t discuss his future with the Giants following Sunday’s loss to the Eagles.

“You’ve got your questions prepared for what direction I’m going in,” Coughlin said, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. “I’m not going to answer them.”

Reports from earlier in the day have said Coughlin “ride off into the sunset” in the coming days.

  • Jason Cole of B/R reports that of all the NFL coaching jobs that could be available, the most attractive opening would be the New York Giants’ job.
  • People around the league point to the consistency of the franchise in terms of the amount of support from ownership.
  • On top of that, the Giants have QB Eli Manning and WR Odell Beckham Jr in place to work with.

Lions

  • Greg Gabriel expects the Lions to interview Giants assistant GM Kevin Abrams for the GM opening.
  • Mike Garafolo adds that with former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi working with the Lions as a consulted, it makes sense that Abrams would be on their radar.
  • Garafolo mentions that it would not be surprising to see the Lions also interview Giants personnel executive Marc Ross for the job as well.

Raiders

  • Jason Cole of B/R, citing three highly placed NFL sources, reports that Oracle founder Larry Ellison has contacted Raiders owner Mark Davis about buying a portion of the team.
  • However, sources have told Cole that nothing is imminent at this point in time.
Should Ellison buy a portion of the team, it could add an element of respect to the Raiders organization as they try to move the team or get a new stadium in the Bay Area. He would also lessen the concern from other NFL owners about Davis’ and the Raiders.
