Report: Sean Payton Won’t Be The Next Dolphins’ Head Coach

Pro Football Talk, citing a league source, reports that if Sean Payton ends up leaving the Saints, he won’t be taking the Dolphins’ head-coaching job.

The Dolphins have come up as a speculative option for Payton for a few months now, but recent reports have tied him to other jobs such as the Colts, Giants and 49ers instead.

Jay Glazer of FOX reported earlier this morning that Payton will meet with GM Mickey Loomis tomorrow to discuss his future in New Orleans. According to Glazer, the Saints could consider trading him if a team was willing to part with a second-rounder.

The fact that teams would need to part with draft picks in order to land Payton is likely a big factor that will be weighed with the alternative of signing another head coach and keeping the draft picks.

Payton is under contract through the 2017 season, and makes $8 million per year with this agreement. However, reports have said that Payton’s contract will not deter teams from approaching the Saints about a potential deal.

Payton, 51, has lead the Saints to a record of 84-53 (61.3 percent) including their only Super Bowl title over the course of eight-plus seasons in New Orleans.

We’ll have more regarding Payton’s future with either the Saints or other NFL teams as the news is available.
