Dolphins Willing To Move On From QB Ryan Tannehill If New HC Wants?

A Miami Dolphins’ source told Jason Cole on Friday that the Dolphins are “flexible” when it comes to QB Ryan Tannehill and his future with the team.

According to Cole, any coach that is brought in to run the team will have the opportunity will have the option to decide whether or not to keep Tannehill in place as their quarterback moving forward.

The biggest reason that Miami is willing to give a new head coach the option to move on from Tannehill is the fact that his contract with the team allows them to move on with limited repercussions in regards to their cap.

Tannehill is set to count $18.5 million against the team’s salary cap, but Cole mentions that only $7 or so would be dead money in 2016.

All indications out of Miami have been that they believe Tannehill can be a long-term quarterback for them. However, it’s probably wise for them to remain fluid with their level of commitment to Tannehill, given that a new head coach may have a different opinion and he has still yet to develop into a top-tier quarterback.

Tannehill, 27, signed a six-year, $95.272 million contract that includes $45 million guaranteed. He’ll make a base salary of $745,000 and another $9.34 million in 2016.

Entering today’s game, Tannehill had appeared in 15 games and thrown for 3,860 yards while completing 61.7 percent of his passes to go along with 22 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 26 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players.
