Drew Brees “Absolutely” Open To Extension With Saints

Saints QB Drew Brees told reporters that he would “absolutely” be open to signing a contract extension that would offer New Orleans a more reasonable cap figure in 2016, per Mike Triplett.

The Saints will need to figure something out with Brees’ contract as he is in line to count a staggering $30 million against the team’s salary cap in 2016.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media previously reported that Brees will probably need to take a hometown discount to return next year.

Some have said that New Orleans’ best option would be to sign Brees to a short-term extension, which would reduce his cap figure to something more manageable while keeping him under team control a little longer.

It will be interesting to see what happens with HC Sean Payton and whether his situation could factor into the team’s approach to Brees and a potential new deal.

Brees, 36, has two years remaining on his five-year, $100 million contract that included $40 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $18.75 million and $19.75 million over the next two years.

This season, Brees has thrown for 4,870 yards while completing 68.3 percent of his passes to go along with 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 6 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.
