Bills Sign GM Doug Whaley To A Multi-Year Contract Extension

Update:

The Buffalo Bills announced Sunday that they’ve signed GM Doug Whaley a contract extension.

  • Ian Rapoport reports that this isn’t just a one-year deal for Whaley to prevent him from being a lame-duck GM. He’ll receive a multi-year contract from the Bills.

The only thing that I expect to do is every day come in here and try to get better,” said Whaley. “I just know that every day I’ve come in here I’ve gotten positive feedback from the Pegulas. I love working with Rex, I love working with this whole staff. I think our personnel staff has done a very good job in acquiring players.

“I’m excited with what we bring to the table and I’ll just keep doing my job. The first thing I was taught in this business is keep your nose down, work hard, and do whatever it takes to help your team win. Everything else takes care of itself.”

We are pleased to announce a multi-year contract extension with our General Manager Doug Whaley,” said Owner Terry Pegula.  “Doug has demonstrated an excellent eye for talent and has been an asset to the organization on many levels.  I look forward to working closely with Doug and Coach Ryan for many years to come.”

Jeremy White is reporting that the Bills are finalizing a  multi-year extension with GM Doug Whaley. According to White, the two sides have an agreement in place.

Adam Benigni has confirmed the report and adds that this is designed to tie Whaley to HC Rex Ryan.

This is interesting considering that Vic Carucci of The Buffalo News reported earlier in the day that Bills owner Terry Pegula told Ryan and Whaley that they have one year to fix the issues with the team and get them into the playoffs or they will be fired.

Just a week ago, Pegula announced that both men would be back for the 2016 season.

Here’s the statement from Pegula:

“As our first full season as owners of the Buffalo Bills draws to a close, management, coaches, players and fans all feel that our expectations were not met.

Bills co-owner and Pegula’s wife) Kim, (team managing partner/president) Russ (Brandon) and I look forward to working and collaborating with Doug Whaley and Rex Ryan in forming a winning future for the organization. Our management team and coaching staff are very capable and work well together. This stable foundation is necessary to achieve long-term success in the NFL.”

Whaley is entering the final year of his contract, while Ryan has another four years left on his deal that guaranteed him $27.5 million in total.

Whaley said recently he isn’t thinking about his contract situation with the team.

The only thing I expect to do, as every day, (is) come in here and try to get better. I mean, that stuff, I’ll leave to Russ and the ownership. I just know that every day I’ve come in here, I’ve had positive feedback from the Pegulas.

We’ll have more regarding the Bills as the news is available.

  1. I don’t know what to believe anymore. There’s this repored rumor and another where Doug and Terry are re-negotiating a contract extension. This was reported by the TMZ like Vic Carucci. He has not been a good reporter of late. The extension report was from their flagship station WGR. So, confusing right?
