NFL Has Deal Between Chargers & Rams To Move To Los Angeles

Nick Canepa reports that the Chargers are not currently in negotiations with the Rams about moving to Inglewood. Canepa admits that the NFL could be developing a plan, but that’s about it.

• Alex Flanagan reports that NFL has framework of a stadium deal between the Rams and Chargers.
• Flanagan adds that the Chargers are vetting the agreement right now, but barring anything unforeseen, the plan is for them to move to L.A.
• Jason La Canfora confirms that the NFL has made “considerable progress” towards an agreement between the two teams that would allow the Chargers move to L.A. very quickly.
• According to La Canfora, a formal decision is likely not that far off.

Jim Trotter of ESPN reports that the Chargers believe the framework presented to them to join the Rams in Los Angeles has “doable components” and would allow them to move in 2016.

Trotter adds that the Chargers and their attorneys and financial people are all reviewing the framework, but believe there could be a deal completed in time for them to be in L.A. for the 2016.

In order for the Chargers to move to L.A., they would need to make a decision before the start of the league year on March 9, per Trotter.

The L.A. Coliseum is reportedly open to hosting multiple teams in needed, so that could be a temporary home for the Chargers and Rams.

There is a pretty big incentive for Rams owner Stan Kroenke to get an agreement in place with the Chargers sooner than later, as this would allow the Rams to begin selling naming rights, club seats, PSLs, and sponsorships at a temporary stadium until 2017 if they have an agreement with a second team to join them in Inglewood.

Jason Cole of B/R is also reporting that the Chargers are likely to accept the relocation offer available to them to join the Rams in Inglewood.

However, the Chargers still expected to at least explore the idea of building their own stadium in San Diego over the next few weeks, but there still isn’t much confidence that they’ll get enough help from the city of San Diego.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that the Chargers already have begun working directly with the NFL to finalize the parameters of a deal that would allow them to move to Inglewood along with the Rams.

According to Florio’s source, Rams owner Stan Kroenke, who wound up being the big winner in the league’s return to Los Angeles, has promised the rest of the owners that he’ll be “reasonable” when it comes to working with the Chargers.

Florio adds that Kroenke has reduced to writing various commitments regarding the terms pursuant to which he’ll accept a second team in his new stadium.

The one aspect of this situation is whether Chargers owner Dean Spanos will elect to be just a tenant or a partner in the Inglewood project. To be a partner, Spanos would reportedly need $500 million or more, according to Jason La Canfora.

Florio seems to think that when you factor in these costs and relocation fees, Spanos may eventually elect to be a tenant, much like the Clippers situation with the Lakers.
