NFL Notes: 49ers, Eagles, Panthers, & Titans

49ers

Jason Cole of B/R reports that the 49ers ultimately decided to go with Chip Kelly over Mike Shanahan because they felt Shanahan wanted to move on from QB Colin Kaepernick and draft a quarterback.

However, 49ers’ ownership would reportedly prefer to keep Kaepernick and believe he can be salvaged, even though there are still questions about his accuracy and decision-making.

Cole mentions that it will be important for Kelly to build a solid running game to protect Kaepernick moving forward.

Eagles

Panthers

Panthers OC Mike Shula explained that he was willing to interview for head coaching jobs while the team was still alive in the playoffs. However, he never received any calls.

All I said (to the media) was I’m focused on the playoffs,” Shula said, via FOX Sports. “The other quote was if it did happen, if I was approached, I’d have to consider that at the time. Those were my only quotes.

“Somebody said I had an agent out there talking, too. I don’t have an agent. I have a friend that helps me, but he definitely wasn’t that person … I don’t know where that (report) came from.”
