Jets Would Like To Sign QB Ryan Fitzpatrick To An Extension Soon

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan mentioned Friday during an interview with WFAN 660 that he plans to speak with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick‘s agent “in the very near future” regarding a contract extension.

Hopefully, we’ll be able to get something done here in the near future,” Maccagnan said, per Rich Cimini.

Maccagnan added that everyone in the organization feels “very strongly” about keeping Fitzpatrick.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports previously reported that the Jets could attempt to re-sign him in the coming months. According to La Canfora, Fitzpatrick would like to return to the Jets next year, so it sounds there’s mutual interest between the two parties.

Jets HC Todd Bowles said around a month ago that he “definitely” wants the team to re-sign the Fitzpatrick during the offseason.

You can see it in his play,” Bowles said of what makes him believe they should re-sign Fitzpatrick, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily New. “You can see it in his demeanor, his professionalism. Every day, the way he approaches his job. So, it’s somebody you definitely want around.

Fitzpatrick, 32, is in the final year of his two-year, $7.5 million contract that included $4 million guaranteed. He’ll make a base salary of $3.25 million before testing the open market in 2016.

This season, Fitzpatrick has thrown for 3,905 yards while completing 59.6 percent of his passes to go along with 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has Fitzpatrick rated as the No. 27 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.
