Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star reports the Chiefs and impending free agent DT Jaye Howard have maintained “solid dialogue” in recent days regarding a contract extension.
However, Paylor’s source referred to the talks as a “fluid” situation.
Paylor previously mentioned that Howard is likely to secure a “significant salary” if he’s allowed to test free agent market after the season. However, there’s still hope that a deal can be get done
Howard has said that they he wants to remain in Kansas City long-term.
“I want to be here,” Howard said. “These guys are like family, man. These are my boys, man, and I like going to war with my brothers. Bailey, (Dontari) Poe, Nick Williams, (Mike) DeVito. I respect them on the field and we’re good. I know they’ve got my back, and they know I’ve got their back.”
Howard, 26, is in the final year of his four-year, $2.535 million rookie contract that included a $435,000 signing bonus. He stands to make a base salary of $660,000 for the 2015 season before testing the open market next year.
In 2015, Howard has recorded 40 tackles, 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and a recovery for the Chiefs over the course of nine games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 25 defensive end in a 3-4 defense out of 57 qualifying players.
