Packers CB Casey Hayward Expects To Test Free Agent Market

Packers impending free agent CB Casey Hayward mentioned that he’ll likely test the open market in the next month.

They normally wait til closer to the deadline,” Hayward said in a text message to Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “But we shall see. I’ll probably hit the market.”

While Green Bay rarely allows their players to depart in free agency, especially a young cornreback who will be entering the prime of his career, there appears to be a chance that Hayward will be playing for another team in 2016.

Hayward previously admitted that their depth at the position could lead to them moving on.

“You just never know,” Hayward said. “They’ve got some young guys here. Pretty sure they want these young guys to play regardless of if I’m here or not. The only thing I can control is what I control, and that was my play for this year. We’ll see how it goes.”

Hayward, 26, was taken in the second round of the 2012 NFL draft and has played out his four-year, $3,309,912 rookie contract. He’ll likely be one of the best available cornerbacks in free agency.

In 2015, Hayward appeared in all 16 games for the Packers and recorded 65 tackles, no interceptions and seven pass defenses for the Packers. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 32 cornerback out of 118 qualifying players.
