NFL Notes: Franchise Tags, Broncos, Cowboys, & Packers

Franchise Tags

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe takes a look at this year’s candidates to receive franchise tags.

  • Von Miller: Volin seems to think Miller will surpass Marcel Dareus’s record $60 million guaranteed, but admits that his value will be hurt by the fact that there’s a $1.3 million difference between the linebacker and defensive end tags.
  • Josh Norman: Volin points out that Darrelle Revis’s $39 million guaranteed will likely be the benchmark for Norman’s next contract.
  • Muhammad Wilkerson: Volin suggests that the Jets use their non-exclusive tag on Wilkerson and they try to trade him.
  • Kirk Cousins: Volin seems to think $19.7 million will be the starting point for long-term contract negotiations between Cousins and the Redskins.
  • Alshon Jeffery: Volin expects Jeffery to sign a five-year, $70 million deals with $45 million guaranteed like Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas did last year.
  • Eric Berry: According to Volin, Berry will likely target a similar contract to that of Patriots S Devin McCourty, who received $28.5 million guaranteed over the course of three years.
  • Cordy Glenn: One issue that could work against Glenn is that the NFL uses an “offensive lineman” tag rather than a specific OT, G, or C designation, which means there is actually some value in franchising a left tackle.

Broncos

  • Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk writes that even though the Broncos want to re-sign QB Brock Osweiler, the possibility exists that another team will want him even more and pay him accordingly.
  • Florio suggests Jets, Rams, and Texans as teams to watch in regards to Osweiler this offseason.

Cowboys

  • Gil Brandt doesn’t see the Cowboys drafting a quarterback at No. 4 overall, but he expects them to take one at some point in this year’s draft.

Packers

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers said his knee feels great after undergoing arthroscopic surgery last month.

It was just good to be out there walking normally,” said Rodgers, via Green Bay Press-Gazette. “It’s nice to not have any clunking around or anything, so it was good.”
