Contract Talks Between Broncos & Brock Osweiler Likely Begin At Combine

According to Mike Klis of 9News, the Broncos plan to discuss a new contract with QB Brock Osweiler that will keep him in Denver for the foreseeable future.

Klis adds that preliminary talks between the Broncos and Osweiler could take place at the Scouting Combine in the next few weeks.

One point of interest for the Broncos is Peyton Manning and his $19 million salary for the 2016 season.

The Broncos have said that they plan to give Manning all the time he needs to decide whether to retire. However, they really need a decision in the next three weeks, as his salary would become fully guaranteed by then.

Klis mentions that the sooner Manning makes up his mind, the sooner the Broncos can get down to business with Osweiler.

Ian Rapoport previously reported that franchising OLB Von Miller could lead to Osweiler testing the free agent market.

All indications from the Broncos have been that they want Osweiler back as their quarterback, but they’re clearly in a difficult spot with so many notable players needing to be addressed this offseason.

Osweiler is likely their top priority beyond Miller. However, they’ll need to reach an agreement on his value, which may actually be somewhat difficult to pinpoint, considering that he has a limited amount of experience and is in line to be one of the best available quarterbacks in a market with plenty of cap space.

Osweiler, 25, is in the final year of his four-year, $3.516 million rookie contract that included a $997,584 signing bonus. He’ll make a base salary of $660,000 for the 2015 season before becoming an unrestricted free agent in the coming months.

In 2015, Osweiler threw for 1,967 yards while completing 61.8 percent of his passes to go along with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions over the course of seven games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 20 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.
