NFL Notes: Mario Williams, Geoff Schwartz, Packers, Redskins & Texans

Mario Williams

  • Mike Sando believes the Jaguars would be a good fit for current Bills DE Mario Williams when/if they release him.
  • Sando points to the team’s obvious need for a pass-rusher and mentioned that the Seahawks pursued him when Gus Bradley was still on their coaching staff.
  • Another option for Williams, according to Sando, could be the Buccaneers, who are also 4-3 team in need of a pass-rusher.
  • The last team Sando mentions as a speculative option for Williams is the Seahawks.

Geoff Schwartz

  • Former Giants OL Geoff Schwartz mentioned during an interview with Sirius XM Radio that he wants to play for a contender: “I want to go to a winner. I’m tired of congratulating my friends on winning Super Bowls.”

Packers

  • According to Rob Demovsky, the Packers know they need someone to help them stretch the field next year.
  • With this in mind, Demovsky expects them to bring in either a tight end or a receiver with some speed for QB Aaron Rodgers.

Redskins

  • According to John Keim of ESPN, the idea of the Redskins releasing WR DeSean Jackson doesn’t make sense.
  • Keim mentions that success in the passing game was a big reason for Kirk Cousins success in 2015, so moving on Jackson or Pierre Garcon would likely have a big impact on their offense next year.
  • In fact, Keim believes Washington could use even more receiver help.
  • Keim adds that if the Redskins believe Jackson can continue to perform at this level for the next few years, a contract extension could make sense for the two parties.

Texans

Joel Corry of CBS Sports mentions that the Texans are “good shape” in regards to their cap this offseason.

The Texans are in good shape, they’ve managed the salary cap well,” said Corry, via the Houston Chronicle. “They won’t have to convert salaries into roster bonuses like they did last year with J.J. Watt.

“The Texans can be open for business, keeping their own guys or signing free agents if they want, but I wouldn’t expect a huge spending spree based on how they’ve operated in the past.

  • Corry believes Texans should approach veteran RB Arian Foster about a pay cut rather than release him outright. Houston give him the opportunity to earn the difference back via incentives.
  • Aaron Wilson mentions that the Texans are expected to cut S Rahim Moore, and could consider doing the same with TE Garrett Graham, LB Akeem Dent and WR Cecil Shorts.
  • Cutting veteran DT Vince Wilfork would free up $4 million in available cap space.
  • According to Wilson, the Texans will likely retain G Brandon Brooks, center Ben Jones and punter Shane Lechler, or look for replacements in free agency.
  • Wilson expects Brooks to be the most expensive of the team’s free agents, as he could command something close to $6 million per year.
  • Wilson admits that DL Jared Crick could depart in free agency.
