NFL Notes: Cowboys, Packers, Redskins, & Steelers

Cowboys

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones confirmed that they have no plans to use either the franchise or transition tags on any of their unrestricted free agents.

“We are not using the franchise or transition tag,” Jones said, via David Moore of the Dallas Morning News.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as CB Morris Claiborne, LB Rolando McClain, DE Jeremy Mincey, DE Jack Crawford, and DE Greg Hardy are their most notable free magnets.

Packers

  • Tom Silverstein considers it unlikely that the Packers will re-sign CB Casey Hayward given their depth at the position.
  • Silverstein expects the Packers to move on from backup QB Scott Tolzien and promote Brett Hundley to the No. 2 role.
  • Silverstein doesn’t rule out the possibility of Green Bay bringing back RB James Starks, OLB Nick Perry and FB John Kuhn this offseason.
  • As for potential free agents targets, Silverstein also views Matt Forte as a fit in the team’s offense if they choose to move on from Starks.
  • Silverstein mentions that Broncos LB Danny Trevathan, Colts LB Jerrell Freeman and Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson would all make sense for Green Bay if they actually changed their approach towards signing free agents.

Redskins

Bill Barnwell of ESPN offers five roster moves the Redskins should consider this offseason.

  • The first of which is to franchise QB Kirk Cousins, as this would buy them some additional time evaluate him as their starter. Barnwell admits that Washington could still work on a long-term extension in the coming months after using the tag.
  • Probably the most obvious move for the Redskins is to cut QB Robert Griffin III, which will create $16.1 million in cap space.
  • Barnwell suggests cutting veteran DBs Chris Culliver and Dashon Goldson and consider free agents options like Sean Smith and Tashaun Gipson.
  • Barnwell also recommends releasing WR Andre Roberts and taking the $3 million in savings.
  • A potential free agent target for Washington, according to Barnwell, could be Broncos ILB Danny Trevathan.

Steelers

  • Steelers GM Kevin Colbert said they have no plans to release K Shaun Suisham anytime soon, but added that they’ll have a kicker competition this summer. (Mark Kaboly)
  • Colbert said they’re anticipating that OLB James Harrison will want to return next year. (James Wexell)
  • Colbert said they plan to see what the market is for LT Kelvin Beachum(James Wexell)
  • Colbert doesn’t anticipate them making any drastic changes this offseason and referred to their cap situation as being “pretty good.” (James Wexell)
