According to Ian Rapoport, Lions impending free agent DT Haloti Ngata weighed his options in recent weeks, but plans to continue his NFL career.
Rapoport mentions that Ngata wants to play in 2016 and beyond and plans to talk to the Lions to see if there’s still a fit in Detroit.
Ngata has said previously that he would “love to stay” in Detroit for the foreseeable future.
“I’d love to stay,” Ngata said, via Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com. “I love what coach (Jim) Caldwell has done here. I love playing under him and coach Kris (Kocurek). I feel like I got in a groove at the end of the season and hopefully I can play a full season understanding the system.”
Ngata, 32, came over in a trade with the Ravens that sent fourth- and fifth-round picks to Baltimore in return for Ngata and a seventh-round selection.
He played out his five-year, $61 million contract that included $37.1 million guaranteed and will now be an unrestricted free agent in the coming months.
In 2015, appeared in 14 games and recorded 25 tackles, 2.5 sacks and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 23 defensive tackle of 70 qualifying players.
