Cowboys Release Statement Regarding Randy Gregory’s Four-Game Suspension

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones said that he’s disappointed by the news that DE Randy Gregory has been suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season for violating the NFL substance-abuse policy.

“This is a disappointment,” Jones said, per David Helman. “We have been clear with Randy about what his responsibilities are and what is expected. This is something that he is going to have to work through and correct.

There were obviously a lot of concerns about Gregory during last year’s draft, which led to him dropping to the end of the round two, even though he was viewed as a top-ten talent.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk mentioned that Gregory’s suspension could actually give free agent DE Greg Hardy some leverage with the team.

This is, of course, assuming that the Cowboys would even want Hardy back after a problem-filled 2015 season.

Gregory, 23, is in the second year of his four-year, $3.814 million contract that includes $1.404 million guaranteed. He stands to make a base salary of $525,000 for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Gregory appeared in 12 games for the Cowboys and recorded 11 tackles and no sacks.
