Broncos & Brock Osweiler To Open Contract Talks This Week

Mike Klis of 9News reports that the Broncos will open contract talks with free agent QB Brock Osweiler at the Combine this week.

According to Klis, there have been no open discussions between the Broncos and Osweiler’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, up to this point. However, part of this is out of respect to QB Peyton Manning, who is still deciding whether to play another season.

The Broncos have said that they plan to give Manning all the time he needs to decide whether to retire. However, they really need a decision in the coming weeks, as his salary would become fully guaranteed in early March.

All indications from the Broncos have been that they want Osweiler back as their quarterback, but they’re clearly in a difficult spot with so many notable players needing to be addressed this offseason.

While Osweiler is likely their top priority outside of OLB Von Miller, they’ll need to reach an agreement on his value, which may actually be somewhat difficult to pinpoint, considering that he has a limited amount of experience and is in line to be one of the best available quarterbacks in a market with plenty of cap space.

Osweiler, 25, is in the final year of his four-year, $3.516 million rookie contract that included a $997,584 signing bonus. He’ll make a base salary of $660,000 for the 2015 season before becoming an unrestricted free agent in the coming months.

In 2015, Osweiler threw for 1,967 yards while completing 61.8 percent of his passes to go along with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions over the course of seven games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 20 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.

We have him featured in our Top 100 – 2016 Free Agents list.
