Bills May Have A Tough Time Keeping LT Cordy Glenn Due To Cap Situation

Albert Breer of NFL Media mentions that it would be “tough cap-wise” for the Bills to use the franchise tag on impending free agent LT Cordy Glenn.

According to Breer, the Bills are in line to enter the offseason with over $160 million committed for 46 players.

While cutting veteran OLB Mario Williams would create $12.9 million, that sum would essentially just transfer to Glenn if they franchise him at the cost of $13 million.

Last we heard regarding Glenn, Tyler Dunne of the Buffalo News reported that his “floor” could be $10 million annually in his next contract.

Dunne mentions that a number of factors are likely to be in Glenn’s favor this offseason, as he’s still just 26 years old, plays a premium position that has little depth in this year’s free agent market, and rookies have really struggled to make an immediate impact at left tackle in the NFL.

As of now, there haven’t been any substantive talks between the two sides, according to Dunne.

However, Bills GM Doug Whaley a few weeks ago that they are “starting the process” in regards to re-signing Glenn and fellow free agent G Richie Incognito to contract extensions.

Glenn, 26, has played out his four-year, $4,865,180 rookie contract and is in line to be one of the most sought after free agents in this year’s free agent market.

With the cap rising again this year, and limited offensive tackle depth, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him secure a massive contract.

In 2015, Glenn appeared in all 16 games for the Bills and was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 9 offensive tackle out of 76 qualifying players.

We have Glenn featured in our Top 100 – 2016 Free Agents list.
