Giants Would Like To Sign Jason Pierre-Paul To A “One-Year, Prove It” Deal

Jordan Raanan of NJ.com reports that the Giants would like to sign free agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul to a “one-year, prove-it” contract.

However, Raanan adds that if Pierre-Paul has a better offer on the table from another team, it’s likely he’ll be playing elsewhere in 2016.

According to Raanan, it’s likely that the Giants won’t reach an agreement on a deal this week, which means Pierre-Paul will likely be gauging his value during the legal tampering period.

Pierre-Paul is believed to be looking for a long-term deal that would pay him close to $10 million per year, but Raanan isn’t sure if this is actually plausible, considering that obvious concerns regarding JPP.

The Giants have plenty of cap space to work with, but it sounds like they’re going to approach talks with Pierre-Paul with some amount of caution, and possibly look elsewhere for pass-rushers if need be.

Pierre-Paul, 26, wound up receiving the Giants’ franchise tag last year, but because he suffered serious injury to his hand, the two parties later renegotiated a one-year deal worth up to $8.71 million based on incentives.

In 2015, Pierre-Paul recorded 20 tackles, a sack, two fumble recoveries and fouor pass defenses over the course of seven games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 16 defensive end in a 4-3 system out of 51 qualifying players.
