Chiefs Have Had Preliminary Contract Talks With DT Dontari Poe

Chiefs GM John Dorsey confirmed at the Combine last week that he has met with Jimmy Sexton, the agent for DT Dontari Poe, regarding a long-term extension.

“We’ve talked, we’ve talked more than once,” Dorsey said, via the Kansas City Star. “I have great affection for Dontari Poe. I think he represents everything we want to do, culturally. I think he’s a good football player. We will continue this process. Right now, I’m concentrating on other things. But eventually, we’ll get to that.”

The Chiefs do have a number of notable free agents to address including S Eric Berry, CB Sean Smith, LB Derrick Johnson and OLB Tamba Hali among others.

With this in mind, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Poe’s contract get put on the back burner until they have things figured out with their free agent.

Poe, 25, was taken with the No. 11 overall pick by the Chiefs back in 2012. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $11,320,006 rookie contract and stands to make $6.15 million for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Poe appeared in 15 games for the Chiefs and recorded 39 tackles, one sack, a forced fumble and a recovery. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 32 interior defensive lineman out of 123 qualifying players.
