Cowboys Expected To Cut CB Brandon Carr, Could Target CB Adam Jones

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reports that the Cowboys are expected to release veteran CB Brandon Carr unless he’s willing to accept a pay cut.

Interestingly enough, Robinson mentions that the Cowboys could target Bengals free agent CB Adam Jones as a replacement.

Earlier in the day, Jones told Pro Football Talk that his agent has been contacted by several teams explaining that he’ll have options if he doesn’t re-sign with Cincinnati.

As of now, I don’t know, to be honest,” Jones said. “I know a lot of other teams have been contacting my agent saying if I don’t get signed there are other places I can go.”

Jones added that he’s open to signing with any team that wants him and has a good chance to win.

The Cowboys are familiar with Jones and reportedly view him as a player would could come with a reasonable price tag in free agency.

As for Carr, there has been a lot of talk in recent years that he could be a cap casualty, but the structure of his contract and the team’s lack of depth at cornerback factored into Dallas electing to hold onto him.

Carr, 29, is in the fourth year of his five-year, $50.1 million contract that included $25.5 million guaranteed. He stands to make a base salary of $9.1 million for the 2016 season and another $10 million in 2017.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Carr would free up $6,383,000 in available cap space while creating $7,434,000 in dead money. However, the Cowboys could designate him as a post-June 1 release, which would improve those figures to $9.1 million in available cap space and $4,717,000 in dead money.

In 2015, Carr appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and recorded 76 tackles, a fumble recovery and six pass defenses.

Jones, 32, played out his three-year contract with the Bengals and will be an unrestricted free agent in the coming months. Despite his age, Jones has actually played pretty well for the Bengals, so it will be interesting to see if they’re interested in bringing him back.

In 2015, Jones appeared in 14 games for the Bengals and recorded 62 tackles, one sack, three interceptions, a forced fumble and 12 pass defenses. He also contributed 235 kick return yards and 179 punt return yards. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 16 cornerback out of 118 qualifying players.

We have him featured in our Top 100 – 2016 Free Agents list.
