Report: Broncos Have Made Brock Osweiler A “Substantial Offer”

James Palmer of NFL Media reports that the Broncos have made free agent QB Brock Osweiler a “substantial offer.

The Broncos have less than a week to get something done with Osweiler before the start of free agency. However, teams can begin negotiating with Osweiler this weekend, which could complicate matters even further.

Jason Cole of B/R recently reported that Denver isn’t willing to pay Osweiler a salary of $16 million range, which would leave him in the same tier as Jay Cutler and Alex Smith, even in a short-term contract.

Although, the Broncos are prepared to allow Osweiler to test the open market, as they don’t believe he’ll be able to secure this kind of money from another team, according to Cole.

Cole added that Denver likes backup QB Trevor Siemian and believe he has the potential to be a starting quarterback at some point.

There are teams with a need at quarterback and plenty of cap space to work with, so you can’t completely rule out the possibility of someone willing to pay him more money.

This figures to be one of the more interesting situations to watch in the coming days, as Osweiler is clearly one of the best available quarterbacks in this year’s free agent market.

Some speculative options for Osweiler could include the Texans, Browns, Rams and possibly the 49ers, depending on what happens with Colin Kaepernick.

Osweiler, 25, played out the final year of his four-year, $3.516 million rookie contract and will be an unrestricted free agent next week.

In 2015, Osweiler threw for 1,967 yards while completing 61.8 percent of his passes to go along with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions over the course of seven games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 20 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.

We have him featured in our Top 100 – 2016 Free Agents list.
