Dolphins, Giants, & Jaguars In The Mix For DE Mario Williams

Update:

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that the Jaguars are also in the mix for free agent DE Mario Williams.

  • However, Garafolo adds that there is no visit lined up with the Jaguars or Giants right now.
  • Ian Rapoport is now reporting that a date for Williams to meet with the Giants isn’t set in stone right now.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Mario Williams will arrive in New Jersey Sunday night and visit with the Giants on Monday.

  • Interestingly enough, Rapoport adds that the Giants have an opportunity to keep there, implying that they could hammer out a contract and prevent him from meeting with another team.

The Miami Dolphins announced that their meeting with free agent DE Mario Williams concluded Sunday afternoon without an agreement.

Williams is expected to travel to New York next to visit with the Giants regarding an opportunity.

Jordan Raanan of NJ.com, citing a person with knowledge of the situation, reports that free agent DE Mario Williams‘ next visit will likely be to the Giants.

According to Raanan, the Giants are among four or five teams that could host Williams for visits in the coming days.

On Saturday, Williams took his first visit since becoming a free agent to Miami to meet with the Dolphins.

New York is clearly in the market for pass-rushers and Williams is among the best available options, so this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

The benefit of signing Williams to a contract is that he won’t factor into a team’s 2017 compensatory picks since he was a roster cut.

Williams, 30, was in the fourth year of his six-year, $96 million contract when he was released earlier in the week in a move that freed up $12.9 million in cap space for the Bills.

In 2015, Williams appeared in 14 games and recorded 17 tackles and four sacks for the Bills. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 47 defensive end in a 4-3 defense out of 51 qualifying players.

We have him featured in our Top 100 – 2016 Free Agents list.
