Panthers Expected To Have Interest In S Eric Weddle

According to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers are interested in free agent S Eric Weddle.

Person notes that Weddle previously played under Panthers HC Ron Rivera while they were both in San Diego years ago.

The Panthers finally have cap space to work with after a few years of being in a tough cap situation. Weddle is clearly among the best available options at safety and could probably land a solid contract, but reports have said that he would prefer to sign with a contender over taking top dollar in his next deal.

Carolina could offer him the chance to compete for a title and an overall comfortable situation in terms of their defensive scheme, so this really could be something to watch in the coming days.

Weddle, 31, finished a five-year, $40 million contract that included $19 million guaranteed. The Chargers placed him on the injured reserve after Week 16 because of a lingering groin injury.

In 2015, Weddle appeared in 13 games for 79 total tackles, six pass defenses, one fumble recovery and 0.5 of a sack. Pro Football Focus rated Weddle as the No. 33 overall safety out of 88 qualifiers.

We have him featured in our Top 100 – 2016 Free Agents list.
