Panthers Discussing Contract Extension With FB Mike Tolbert

Rand Getlin of NFL Media reports that the Panthers and the reps for free agent FB Mike Tolbert have been in discussions regarding a potential contract extension.

  • According to Getlin, the two parties could work on a deal up to the start of free agency.

Earlier in the day, Tolbert told Sirius XM NFL Radio that there have been some talks with Carolina about a possible return. However, he plans to entertain other offers in the coming days.

I may be on the move, you never know,”  Tolbert said.

Tolbert mentioned close to a month ago that he “absolutely” wants to re-sign with Carolina this offseason.

Absolutely,” Tolbert said, via the Charlotte Observer. “We’ll take care of all the business aspects of my contract after the season. I would love to stay, but you never know what happens. We’ll see.”

Tolbert did, however, admit that he’ll still need to do what’s best for his family, even if it involves relocating.

“These guys are my brothers. I don’t want to leave anymore than the next guy. But I have to do what’s best for my family and for me. If moving is part of it, then that’s a part of it. But I don’t want to.

Tolbert, 30, played out the final year of his four-year, $10 million contract and is one of the best available fullbacks in this year’s free agent class.

In 2015, Tolbert appeared in all 16 games for the Panthers and ran for 256 yards on 62 carries (4.1 YPC) to go along with 18 receptions for 154 yards receiving and four total touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 11 fullback out of 22 qualifying players.
