NFL Notes: Marshawn Lynch, Chargers, Jets, & Panthers

Marshawn Lynch

  • Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk points out that even though Marshawn Lynch announced his retirement several months ago and the Seahawks even confirmed his plans to walk away, Lynch still hasn’t officially retired.
  • Seattle has yet to officially place Lynch on the reserve-retired list, which means he hasn’t signed his retirement paperwork.
  • Florio mentions that it’s possible Lynch could be delaying making his retirement official in the hope of getting the Seahawks to cut him loose, which would at least give him the option of signing with another team in the event he wanted to continue playing.
  • Florio wonders if the Raiders could be a landing spot for him should the Seahawks release him.

Chargers

  • NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said of the Chargers staying in San Diego: “I said it. I mean it. The Chargers belong in San Diego.” (Michael Gehlken)
  • Goodell adds that if a new stadium were to be built, San Diego could return to hosting future Super Bowls. (Michael Gehlken)

Jets

Rich Cimini of ESPN is taking both the Eagles and the Jets at their word regarding quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Philadelphia has said that they’re not trading Bradford, even after they cut a deal with the Browns for the No. 2 overall pick earlier in the week. The Jets told reporters that their focus is on re-signing Fitzpatrick.

With this in mind, Cimini doesn’t see the two getting seriously discussing a trade for Bradford.

According to Cimini, it would likely require the Jets to part with either a third- or fourth-rounder for Bradford, and it’s clear that they really value draft picks. Plus, they’d inherit Bradford’s current contract on top of parting with draft compensation.

Panthers

  • David Newton believes veteran CB Antonio Cromartie makes the most sense for the Panthers in regards to potential free agent additions.
