Broncos Plan To Give Paxton Lynch Opportunity To Win Starting Job This Summer

Mike Klis of 9News, citing league sources, reports that the Broncos’ brass hope to determine during OTAs and minicamp if former first-round QB Paxton Lynch is ready to become their starting quarterback in 2017.

According to Klis, the Broncos want to do everything they can to push Lynch next year and believe he has the talent and character to succeed as the team’s starter.

Even so, Klis says that Lynch will still have to beat out Trevor Siemian for the job this summer.

For what it’s worth, Klis mentions that the Broncos won’t be in the trade market for Cowboys QB Tony Romo due in part to his contract and his injury history.

New Broncos HC Vance Joseph told reporters during his introductory press conference a few weeks ago that they will hold an open competition between Siemian and Lynch for the team’s starting quarterback position next season.

“Trevor had a fine year. He’s smart with the ball. Paxton a big strong guy with a big arm,” Joseph said, per Troy Renck. “It’s going to be an open competition.

Siemian played better that many expected this season, despite dealing with injuries. He underwent a “minor, elective” procedure on his left, non-throwing shoulder a few weeks ago, but he’s expected to be ready for the offseason program.

“It’s optional surgery,” Siemian said, via Mike Klis of 9News. “It really only bothers me when I work out but I figure I’m going to have to keep working out for a while so I’m getting it fixed.”

Lynch, 22, was taken with the No. 26 overall pick after the Broncos traded up from No. 31 overall to get their quarterback of the future. He signed a four-year, $9.4 million contract that includes $7.88 guaranteed and is set to make a base salary of $450,000 for the 2016 season.

In 2016, Lynch has completed 49-of-83passes (59 percent) for 497  yards to go along with two touchdowns and an interception for the Broncos over the course of three games.

We’ll have more regarding the Broncos as the news is available.
