2011 A Make Or Break Season For Colt McCoy?

Colt McCoy‘s rookie season had some decent highlights, wins over the Patriots and Saints in consecutive games, but the majority of season highlighted McCoy’s lack of NFL experience.

McCoy finished the 2010 season with 6 td’s and 9 int’s along with 1576 yards passing. These numbers are below average but then again so was the teams entire offense other than Peyton Hillis.

Team president Mike Holmgren addresses Colt McCoy’s future with the team by mentioning that it will take some time before they know for sure whether or not he’s their quarterback of the future.

“If the guy gets a chance to play — not sit on the bench and watch, but play — with the same coach in the same system, it takes two years before he even looks like he can play,” Holmgren said. “Now, by the end of the two years, you know, I know, I’ve always known … you know if he’s your guy. That’s two years … 32 games. So, if I’m sticking to my beliefs — which I really do believe that’s the formula for the offense I was in — you go through the bumps in the road.”

Even though he played in eight games last season, it would be hard to count them against the 32 games that Holmgren is eluding to because it was Eric Mangini‘s offense and Pat Shurmur will be implementing a similar scheme as the one Holmgren ran in years past. If he believes that a quarterback needs 32 in a specific offense before you know whether he’s your guy, then he should be given at least the 2011 season to see what he can do.
