2017 Salary Cap Expected To Be Between $166M – $169M

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, reports that the 2017 salary cap is expected to be between $166 million to $169 million per team.

Prior estimates had the final salary cap at somewhere between $166 million – $170 million, which would be an increase of $10.73 million – $15 million, so this news is in line with what has been previously reported.

A few weeks ago, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters that the 2017 salary cap could go up by as much as $15 million per team.

Typically, the first figures floated towards the end of the season prove to be low estimates and later climb higher as we draw closer to the start of free agency.

The salary cap has been on the rise for the past few seasons after remaining flat for the first few years of the current collective bargaining agreement. Before this, the cap had increased by $10 million annually and total of 37.6 percent in just the past five years.

NFL teams are required to spend 89 percent of their cap and cash spending has to 95 percent of the salary cap limit over a period of four years or the difference will go to the union who distributes the money between the players.

We’ll have more regarding the 2017 salary cap as the news is available.
