2018 Salary Cap Expected To Be “At Least” $178M, Could Exceed $179M

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, reports that the 2018 salary cap will be at least be $178 million and could exceed $179 million once it’s finalized.

This fits with a prior report from Mike Jurecki who said the cap could end up exceeding $180 million once it’s finalized for the upcoming league year.

Before that, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media that the NFL distributed 2018 salary cap projections to teams during the financial portion of the league meetings of between $174.2 – $178.1 million.

In 2017, the salary cap was set at $167 million per team, which means the NFL is projecting an increase of 6-7 percent from last year. If Jurecki’s source is accurate about topping $180 million, the one-year increase could end up being closer to 8 percent.

The final 2018 salary cap figure will available in the coming weeks.

Typically, the first figures floated towards the end of the season prove to be low estimates and later climb higher as we draw closer to the start of free agency.

The salary cap has been on the rise for the past few seasons after remaining flat for the first few years of the current collective bargaining agreement.

NFL teams are required to spend 89 percent of their cap and cash spending has to be 95 percent of the salary cap limit over a period of four years or the difference will go to the union, who would distribute the money between the players.

We’ll have more regarding the 2018 salary cap as the news is available.
