Update: 49ers CB Eric Wright Officially Retiring From NFL

Update:

Mike Garafolo reports that 49ers CB Eric Wright is in fact filing paperwork today and will officially retire from the NFL.

  • 49ers HC Jim Harbaugh indicated earlier in the day that Wright’s absence from minicamp is because he is considering retirement, according to Matt Barrows.

Wright, 28, signed a one-year contract worth $855,000 with San Francisco back in early March. According to OverTheCap.com, Wright had a 2014 cap figure of $590,000.

As things stand right now, Wright would have to compete for playing time with Perrish Cox and Chris Cook and there is no guarantee that he would be able to convince the 49ers to keep him over the other two players.

San Francisco initially traded a late-round conditional pick to the Buccaneers for Wright before a failed him nullified the deal. Tampa Bay subsequently placed him on waivers and the 49ers later signed him to a one-year deal.

Wright appeared in 92 games over the course of seven years in the league. He recorded 332 tackles, 15 interceptions, three forced fumbles and five recoveries.
