49ers & Colin Kaepernick Reach Agreement On Restructured Deal

Adam Caplan and Adam Schefter are reporting that the 49ers have and QB Colin Kaepernick have reached an agreement on a restructured contract that will void the final four years of his current deal.

  • According to the report, the monetary value of Kaepernick’s contract will remain the same for this season, but Kaepernick will have the option of voiding the contract after this year, which would allow him to test the open market as an unrestricted free agent.
  • Schefter adds that if Kaepernick doesn’t void deal after this season, his contract terms for 2017 will remain the same at a $14.5 million salary. However, there would be no guaranteed money.
  • San Francisco will not be allowed to use their franchise tag on him.
  • Ian Rapoport confirms the report and adds that the injury guarantees for 2017 included in Kaepernick’s contract have been removed as part of the agreement.

This comes just a day after the 49ers announced that they were making a change at quarterback and going with Kaepernick this weekend.

Kaepernick has taken a lot longer than many anticipated to get back into game shape following offseason surgeries, so it will be interesting to see how he looks this weekend.

Kaepernick, 28, was in the third year of his seven-year, $126.97 million contract that included $61 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $11.9 million for the 2016 season.

While those numbers are impressive on their own, the contract is essentially a pay-as-you-go agreement that includes ways for San Francisco to walk away with limited repercussions, as long as Kaepernick is healthy.

In 2015, Kaepernick threw for 1,615 yards while completing 59.3 percent of his passes to go along with six touchdowns and five interceptions over the course of eight games. He also added 228 yards rushing and a touchdown.
