49ers Intend On Signing QB Daunte Culpepper?

The  Matt Maiocco of the Comcast Sports Bay Area is reports that the San Francisco 49ers will in fact be signing QB Daunte Culpepper to a one-year contract. Maiocco notes that the 49ers intend on using Culpepper as their third-string quarterback.

Following the 49ers loss to the New Orleans Saints, head coach Jim Harbaugh mentioned that there no “clear-cut” decision yet as to who the teams starting quarterback will be. Pro Football Talk reported yesterday that the 49ers were bringing in veteran QB Daunte Culpepper for a workout which was later confirmed by Harbaugh himself.

Obviously if you’re shopping for a quarterback right now there’s not going to be great options available to you but Culpepper happens to be one of the best options. One of Alex Smith or Colin Kaepernick should be able to fend of Culpepper for the starting job if he’s brought in but would at least give them a decent backup option at a reasonable cost.

Yes the 49ers need better quarterback play than what they showed in their first game but the bigger concern should be the offensive line that wasn’t able to block anyone. Culpepper could not even complete passes with three guys in his face.
