49ers Cut QB Josh Johnson Again, Re-Sign S Ray Ventrone

The 49ers have once again released veteran QB Josh Johnson and re-signed S Ray Ventrone.

San Francisco is basically treating Johnson as their 54 player, as this marks the third time in the past month that he has been released.

It’s pretty clear that he and Kassim Osgood are the No. 52 and 53 players on the team’s depth chart as they are continually released and re-signed, depending on the 49ers’ roster needs.

Johnson, 28, signed a one-year contract with the 49ers back in May, but has been behind Blaine Gabbert on their depth chart for several months. Johnson appeared in two games last year while playing for the Bengals and received seven carries for 20 yards.

Ventrone, 30, originally signed on with the Patriots as undrafted free agent out of Villanova back in 2005. He later spent four years with the Browns before bouncing around with the Patriots, Steelers and 49ers.

Ventrone has appeared in one game this season, but has yet to record a single statistic.
