Broncos, 49ers, & Rams Considered “Primary Candidates” For RGIII

Update:

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk writes that the Broncos, 49ers, and Rams are the “primary candidates” for free agent QB Robert Griffin III as of now.

While there has been a lot of talk that the Broncos could have serious interest in signing him, Florio wonders if HC Gary Kubiak‘s relationship with former Redskins HC Mike Shanahan could lead them to consider other options.

The 49ers are reportedly discussing potential trades involving QB Colin Kaepernick, but until that deal is done, RGIII will be on the back burner. However, it’s worth mentioning that he’s been brought up as a speculative option for Chip Kelly since he was still the head coach of the Eagles.

As for the Rams, Florio believes they are a “more distant blip on the radar screen.”

Vincent Bonsignore, citing an NFL source, reports free agent QB Robert Griffin III would “very much” like to play for the Rams.

The Rams have been linked to RGIII for some time now, and while there has been talk that he could be an option for teams like the Broncos and 49ers, there hasn’t been much in terms of definitive interest in him from NFL teams.

Los Angeles used a first-round tender on QB Case Keenum, and have said they plan to have him in place as their starter. However, it’s unlikely that this will deter them from considering other options like RGIII.

There’s still the matter of Nick Foles and his contract, but we’ll get to that later.

ESPN’s Ed Werder mentions that if the 49ers do, in fact, end up trading QB Colin Kaepernick to either the Broncos, Jets or Browns, he expects Chip Kelly to have “serious interest” in signing QB Robert Griffin III.

  • Charles Robinson reports that that the 49ers will be a “priority” option for RGIII.
  • However, Robinson adds that the question is whether the 49ers will have him on their radar.

Numerous reports have said that a Kaepernick trade talks have intensified with interested teams, and a deal could take place as soon as today.

RGIII was mentioned as a potential option for Kelly during his time in Philadelphia, so it’s not surprising to hear some making that connection.

The Broncos are believed to have Griffin on their list of potential quarterbacks to target, but their sights appear to be set on Kaepernick right now.

It’s worth mentioning that signing him to a contract wouldn’t factor into a team’s 2017 compensatory picks.

Griffin, 25, was in the final year of his four-year, $21,119,098 rookie contract when Washington elected to pick up his fifth-year option worth $16.2 million last year.

However, they elected to bench him and make RGIII their third-string quarterback to prevent him from getting injured, which would have made his $16.2 million in 2016 fully guaranteed.

Washington just recently cut him loose, so he’s now a street free agent.

In 2014, Griffin appeared in nine games and threw for 1,694 yards while completing 68.7 percent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and six interceptions.

We’ll have more regarding the 49ers and RGIII as the news is available.
