49ers Fire Defensive Coordinator Eric Mangini

Alex Marvez of FOX Sports is reporting that the 49ers have fired defensive coordinator Eric Mangini.

It was just a week ago that a report said that there was a “strong possibility” that Mangini would return as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator next season.

However, new HC Chip Kelly offered the position to Texans LBs coach Mike Vrabel, but he he elected to turn down the job.

Kelly is clearly gutting the team’s coaching staff, so it will be interesting to see who he hires to run their defense in 2016.

Mangini, 44, was actually hired by the 49ers as their tight ends coach back in 2013. However he was promoted to defensive coordinator after they parted ways with Jim Harbaugh last year and replaced him with Jim Tomsula.

In 2015, Mangini’s defense ranked No. 29 yards allowed, No. 27, in pass yards, No. 29 in rush yards, and No. 18 in points allowed, so there’s plenty of work to be done next year.
