49ers G Anthony Davis Returns To Team, Likely To Be Available For Week 1

Update:

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that 49ers G Anthony Davis returned to practice Sunday morning and will likely be available for their the season opener on Monday night against the Rams.

  • According to Branch, Davis met with 49ers officials after they Saturday practice, and the discussions were able to convince him to return to the team and not retire.

Jason Cole of B/R has been told by a source close to 49ers G Anthony Davis is not retiring from the NFL. Cole’s source added that Davis is not taking any time away from the team.

  • Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk confirms that Davis is not planning to retire.
  • However, sources tell Matt Maiocco that Davis is, in fact, considering retirement. Maiocco’s source mentioned that Davis is “leaning” toward continuing to play while a separate source close to Davis said does not plan to retire. Maiocco adds that Davis and the 49ers have been in contact throughout the day.
  • Matt Barrows reports that Davis’ status is currently “up in the air” and that he had reservations about playing guard.

Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News, citing multiple sources, reports that 49ers G Anthony Davis could once again be considering retirement.

According to Inman, the 49ers are apparently trying to convince him to reconsider walking away.

This comes after the 49ers’ practice report from Saturday listed Davis as not participating in practice for a non-injury related reason.

San Francisco had Davis listed as their starting right guard, so this couldn’t come at a worse time for the team, assuming of course that Davis is, in fact, weighing retirement.

Davis elected to come out of retirement this summer after he was out of the league for a year and a half.

Inman is hearing that Andrew Tiller will start at right guard for the 49ers, if Davis is retiring.

Davis, 26, is a former first-round pick who still has five years remaining on his seven-year, $39.67 million contract that included $17 million guaranteed. At the time of his retirement, he was set to make base salaries of $1.85 million (2015), $2.65 million (2016), $4 million (2017), and $5.375 million (2018-2019).

In 2014, Davis was limited appearing in seven games for the 49ers due to a number of injuries including concussion, knee and hamstring issues.
