Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports new 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan plans to coordinate the team’s offense himself next year, as opposed to hiring an offensive coordinator.
According to Rapoport, Shanahan is still expected to have QBs coach Rich Scangarello and run-game “guru“ Mike McDaniel operate his top assistant coaches. Although, the 49ers have yet to officially hire either of them.
The 49ers are giving Shanahan full control of the team, which includes the 53-man roster, so it will be interesting to see how he handles such a large undertaking with a team that’s in need of a full build.
Shanahan, 37, began his NFL coaching career with the Buccaneers as an offensive quality control coordinator back in 2004. He later joined the Texans in 2006 and worked his way up to offensive coordinator before joining his father’s coaching staff with the Redskins in 2010.
After one season with the Browns, Shanahan departed and accepted the offensive coordinator position with the Falcons.
In 2016, the Falcons’ offense ranked No. 1 in points scored, No. 2 in total yards, No. 5 rushing yards and No. 3 in passing yards.
