49ers “Honing In On” Kyle Shanahan As Next Head Coach

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that 49ers are and have been “honing in on” Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan to be their next head coach.

  • Jason Cole confirms that Shanahan is the 49ers’ top head-coaching candidate but the team has yet to make him an official offer as of now.

This comes just minutes after the news broke that Patriots OC Josh McDaniels is bowing out of the running for the job (NFLTR) and instead plans to be back in New England next year.

Seahawks assistant HC Tom Cable is also in the running for the job, but it appears as though Shanahan is guy they have their sights set on.

It’s worth mentioning that the 49ers will have to wait until the Falcons are no longer in the playoffs to hire Shanahan.

Shanahan, 37, began his NFL coaching career with the Buccaneers as an offensive quality control coordinator back in 2004. He later joined the Texans in 2006 and worked his way up to offensive coordinator before joining his father’s coaching staff with the Redskins in 2010.

After one season with the Browns, Shanahan departed and accepted the offensive coordinator position with the Falcons.

In 2016, the Falcons’ offense ranked No. 1 in points scored, No. 2 in total yards, No. 5 rushing yards and No. 3 in passing yards.

We’ll have more regarding the 49ers and Shanahan as the news is available.
