49ers & Jimmy Garoppolo Moving Closer To Agreement On Long-Term Extension

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the 49ers and QB Jimmy Garoppolo are moving closer toward an agreement on a long-term contract extension.

According to Rapoport, negotiations between the parties have gained “significant momentum” and a deal could be in place at some point in the future.

However, Rapoport cautions that there is still work to be done, but his sources have said the optimism coming from the 49ers has been warranted.

Once completed, the deal is expected to place Garoppolo in the upper echelon of NFL quarterbacks.

Last we heard regarding the 49ers and Garoppolo, GM John Lynch tells Alex Flanagan of NFL Media that they’re “working hard” to get a long-term extension in place with Garoppolo.

He was a great addition to our team – kind of a game-changer,” Lynch said, via CSN Bay Area. “When you find the right guy at that position, it’s really good for your franchise. We believe we found the right guy.

“Now the challenge is getting Jimmy signed. We’re working hard toward that. We’ll see. I think he wants to be with us, and we want him there. It makes too much sense for it not to happen. It’s just a matter of getting it done.

Lynch added that both parties want it to get an agreement in place and referred to Garoppolo as “game-changer.

It’s been a few weeks since there was a Garopplo update.

Lynch told reporters shortly after the regular season concluded that they want to keep Garoppolo in place as their quarterback for a “long, long time.

“We want Jimmy to be a Niner for a long, long time,” Lynch said, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Bay Area. “That process is going to take place here, and we’re eager to get that done — to have the opportunity.

Garoppolo is going to cash in big whether he signs a long-term extension or gets franchised by the 49er.s

Garoppolo, 26, is a former second-round pick of the Patriots back in 2014. He is entering the final year of his four-year, $3,483,898 rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $820,077 to go along with a $75,000 workout bonus for the 2017 season.

The Patriots traded him to the 49ers at this year’s draft deadline in return for a 2018 second-round pick.

Garoppolo is in line to be an unrestricted free agent in the coming months.

In 2017, Garoppolo appeared in six games and threw for 1,560 yards while completing 67.4 percent of his passes to go along with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 10 quarterback out of 40 qualifying players.
