49ers Sign ILB NaVorro Bowman To A Four-Year, $44 Million Extension

Update:

The San Francisco 49ers announced their new four-year, $44 million agreement with veteran ILB NaVorro Bowman.

Over the last six years, NaVorro has become a cornerstone of our organization and securing his future in the Bay Area was a priority for us,” said general manager Trent Baalke. “The perseverance he displayed while overcoming adversity and returning to his All-Pro form provides a great example of what can be accomplished through hard work and self-belief.  This contract extension reaffirms our core philosophy of rewarding our own players and we are thrilled to know NaVorro will play his entire career with the 49ers.”

“I want to thank Jed, the York family and Trent for giving me the opportunity to continue my career where my heart is,” said Bowman. “I appreciate the hard work that Drew and Paraag put in to getting this deal done.

“My teammates and coaches have meant so much to me throughout my career and I thank them for helping me become the player I am today. The support I’ve received from my family and friends throughout my life, especially through the adversity of the past few years, has meant so much to me. I can’t wait for the season to start and play in front of the best fans in the NFL.”

Pro Football Talk first reported that the 49ers have agreed to terms with ILB NaVorro Bowman on a seven-year, $77 million contract.

Bowman had three-years remaining on a five-year, $45.25 million contract, so this is really a four-year, $44 million contract extension. Adam Schefter reports that Bowman receives $20 million guaranteed as part of this deal.

It’s interesting to see the 49ers give Bowman a new contract with so many years still remaining on his current agreement. Teams typically wait until a player in the final year or two of their contract, but this is a clear indication of much San Francisco values Bowman.

Joel Corry mentions that it’s a safe assumption that the guaranteed money included in this contract are injury only.

Bowman, 28, is a former a third-round pick of the 49ers back in 2010 and has emerged to be one of the most talented middle linebackers in the NFL.

In 2015, Bowman appeared in all 16 games and recorded 155 tackles, 2.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 51 overall linebacker out of 97 qualifying players.
