49ers May Pass On Franchising FS Dashon Goldson

The CSN Bay Area reports that a league source has informed them that it’s “no certainty” the 49ers will use their franchise tag on FS Dashon Goldson for the second straight year.

Doing so would require an additional 20 percent, which would run them close to $7.5 million. The report adds that the 49ers would have to create some cap space if they were to franchise Goldson. San Francisco will have until March 4 to decide whether or not to use their tag, but they are expected to continue negotiating a long-term deal with Goldson.

Interestingly enough, this will be the third straight season that Goldson will be an unrestricted free agent. He’s put together back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons for the 49ers and is definitely deserving of a long-term contract. We’ll have to see if they change their mind regarding the franchise tag in the coming days.

We currently have Goldson listed as the No. 9 best available free agent in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
