49ers Nearly Hired Patriots OC Josh McDaniels & Exec Nick Caserio During Offseason

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the 49ers “intently pursued” Patriots OC Josh McDaniels and player personnel director Nick Caserio back in January and nearly got contracts completed with the two of them.

La Canfora’s sources said that the previously reported pairing of McDaniels and ESPN analyst Louis Riddick were never a combination for them and they were instead very much focused on a potential package deal of McDaniels and Caserio.

McDaniels and Caserio come up as potential targets every offseason, but La Canfora says that the 49ers’ job was intriguing enough for both to heavily consider the opportunity.

Depending on what jobs are available next year, La Canfora believes one or both could leave New England.

As for the 49ers, ownership is reportedly “thrilled” by their new head coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch.
